Mushroom CSA

Hosted by Basil Ranch & Fungi Akuafo

This CSA is geared towards beginner mushroom cultivators, eager to grow fresh mushrooms at home. Please note that mushroom grow kits will be available for pick up once a month in the city, thus it is recommended for people who live in and around Calgary.

This is a special type of CSA (Community Supported Agriculture) where all of us in the community are supporting one another to grow our own food – mushrooms! Basil Ranch and Fungi Akuafo are joining forces to provide you with a mushroom grow kit and a learning experience that will teach you how to grow a different mushroom species each month.

March: Blue Oyster – we begin by learning to grow mushrooms from a grow kit
April: Garden Oysters – we will expand our skills by learning to use your kit to inoculate a bucket of straw/wood chips
May: Wine Caps – we head outside to learn how to grow Wine Cap mushrooms in your garden
June: Shaggy Mane – we learn to grow these ‘inky caps’ in a ‘heap’ in your backyard
July: Pink Oysters – Chef Alex Hamilton from The Allium will introduce us to different ways to cook our mushrooms

*NOTE: Extra supplies will be needed for the April and May sessions (straw and/or wood chips). These items are inexpensive and easily attainable, and will be available for purchase separately.

Mushroom grow kit pick ups and workshops will be in Calgary at Highfield Regenerative Farm or at the Basil Ranch in Inglewood.

Monthly workshops will be 60-90 minutes and will either be live online Zoom (March), or in person at Highfield Regenerative Farm in SE Calgary (April-July), weather and COVID dependent.

March – July 2022

Mushroom Movie Night “The Mushroom Speaks”

Hosted by Calgary Horticultural Society
“The Mushroom Speaks” explores the healing qualities of fungi and their ability to regenerate.  This personal journey takes on a walk alongside parasites, symbionts, and decomposers offering ideas of both interconnectedness and collaboration.  Driven by a vision of resistance, the encounters seek possibilities of renewal and question what connects us when the world seems to be falling apart. With mushrooms and their allies, the film invites viewers to imagine a mycro-cultural (r)evolution.  What if the fungus could help us address and radically change our relationship to this world?  Watch the trailer!
